GCC giving China environmental texts
NEW YORK (Xinhua) -- China will receive environmental education textbooks
from US non-governmental organization Global Communications for Conservation
(GCC).
The donation is part of an agreement signed on December 11 by GCC and
China's State Science and Technology Commission (SSTC).
The first American textbooks translated and distributed to schools
and teachers in China will be the Environmental Action Series - examining
issues like energy conservation, habitat and bio-diversity and waste
reduction.
Texts, geared for both college students and elementary-school-aged
children, will be translated. Environmental education programmes for
government officials will be developed.
"This is the first instance of such co-operation between China and
the US private sector. We are pleased to be launching such a historic
joint venture," said GCC Chairperson Laura Utley.
Deng Nan, SSTC vice-minister, witnessed the agreement's signing. Deng
received the 1997 Safari Planet Earth Award from the GCC over the weekend.
The programme is important to China's sustainable development, proving
there are many fields for Sino-US co-operation, Deng said.
Since the Earth Summit at Rio de Janeiro in 1992, China has been educating
the public about the benefits of conservation and sustainability, responsibility
towards the environment, accountability to future generations and the
need for co-operative global action, Deng added.
New York-based GCC was established in 1989 to initiate conservation
and environmental education programmes throughout the world.
