U.S./China Environmental Education Exchange (September, 2000)

Participants of the Exchange

Students

Peng Xin is the oldest student in the group. He is 18 years old and is in the 12th grade. Next year, he will go a university in China, but he hopes to go to graduate school in the United States. When he is not in school, he is doing homework, playing basketball, watching TV, and hanging out with his friends. He has no job, and in fact, no students at his high school have a job while they are in school. To him, the cities in the U.S. had much more green space and less traffic than in Beijing. His favorite parts of the trip were the school visits in Fresno and D.C., Universal Studios, and eating seafood.

Shen Dichai is 15 years old and in 9th grade. For hobbies, he likes sports like basketball and ping pong, going to the park, and playing on his computer. After college, he plans to be a businessman. His favorite part of the trip was staying with his American family in Fresno and eating seafood overlooking Monterey Bay. The U.S. teachers were more personable with the students than at his school. The city streets were cleaner and less crowded. If he comes back to the U.S., he would like visit colleges here and visit Seattle.

Shi Lei would also like to be a business man. He thought that the American students were warm and also very active in the classroom. There is not as much traffic in the U.S., but the shops close early, and there is no place for kids to play at night. In Beijing, he likes to ride his bicycle and see friends. Yosemite and Universal Studios were the highlights of the trip for him, and he would also like to see New York City. He is 16 years old and in 11th grade.

Deng Fushan, a 16-year-old 11th grader, likes to sleep and go swimming. On the trip, he liked the home stay in Fresno and the Monterey Bay Aquarium the best. He wants to be a college professor of physics or math. In the American classrooms that he visited, the students were allowed to ask questions and speak their own opinions, which is different from his own classes. He thought there were more highways in the U.S., the houses were larger, and that people moved about in a more leisurely fashion. If he comes back to the U.S., he would like to see New York and Disneyland.

Lang Yajing is the youngest student and also the only female. She is 13 years old and in the 7th grade. Her favorite part of the trip was singing around the campfire and the mystery dinner at Yosemite. She thought the American classrooms, including the students, teachers, and classroom design, were more active than in Beijing. The cities in the United States had fewer people, so they were less crowded. If she comes back to visit again, she wants to see the famous sights in New York City.
