Airplane Toss

To demonstrate group collaboration, a group airplane toss took place on the second day of the workshop.

All participants individually built their own paper airplanes. They took all their airplanes outside for a fly-off. Each group picked the best flying airplane in the group. The builder of that airplane taught the others in their group how to make that particular airplane. Everyone in the group flew their new airplane -- all the same design now -- and picked the best one.

For the final test, all groups headed back inside for the final fly-off. The best airplane from each group was entered in the final, fun competition.
The purpose of this exercise is for teachers to experience what it feels like to be a student. It also shows how the group process can produce the best solutions.
