No updates on Loki's condition have been published by IPAN since the spring of 1999 for several reasons. Loki's welfare has allegedly become the second most controversial political issue in India. IPAN continues to press at many levels on behalf of Loki, and continues to gather information about his condition and that of other captive elephants at the Mudamalai Elephant Camp, and in-field information concerning elephants in the wild.

Loki is still alive at this time (Dec. 1999). Details about his recent mistreatment and other elephant welfare concerns will not be made public if these continuing problems can be resolved internally through collaboration with the appropriate Indian authorities. - Dr. Michael W. Fox, Dec. 21st 1999
